Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Fireplace Services in Waltham: What to Know First
We provide independent Gelco fireplace services in Waltham, from gas valve troubleshooting on the GS-1 inserts to firebox refractory panel replacement in the old Ultra 27 wood-burning units. Most Gelco jobs book within a week, and you’ll have a written price before we touch anything - Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, no exceptions. The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we.
This page is for Waltham homeowners who know they own a Gelco and need someone who recognizes the model before disassembling it. Call (781) 649-9326 to book. Estimates are free.

How Gelco Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
- GS-1 and GS-2 gas inserts: pilot assembly carbon fouling. These units run a standing pilot that sits low in the firebox. In Waltham’s older homes near the Charles River, basement humidity runs higher than the spec assumes, and the pilot orifice gums up with silica deposits from municipal gas. We pull the burner tray, clean the pilot hood with a #79 drill bit (never a wire brush - that widens the orifice and throws off the flame pattern), and test with a manometer. If the thermopile’s below 325 mV under load, we replace it with an OEM Robertshaw, not a universal.
- Ultra 27 and Ultra 32 wood burners: cracked refractory panels. The factory panels are 1.25-inch cast refractory with a 5-year pro-rated warranty, but they don’t tolerate thermal shock from over-firing. Waltham owners burning oak from the Fells often run the stove too hot, too fast. We measure panel thickness at the crack edge with a caliper; anything under 7/8 inch means replacement. We source panels through our Haven buying network - Gelco OEM when available, HeatShield refractory mix when the factory part is back-ordered.
- Pre-fab metal fireplaces (Gelco 36-inch and 42-inch boxes): warped damper frames. The stamped-steel throat dampers on these units distort after a decade of heat cycling. You feel the draft even when it’s “closed.” We inspect with a borescope from the firebox side, not just the roof, because the warp often hides at the rear hinge pin. Our fix: a Lock-Top or Lyemance replacement damper installed at the flue top, with a stainless cable drop. It’s a better seal than the factory frame ever gave, and it doesn’t require tearing out the surround.
- Gelco direct-vent gas fireplaces: failed blower motors. The OEM Fasco motors on units from the early 2010s draw high amperage and burn out the resistor board. We see this in Waltham’s 1920s conversions on Adams Street and near South Side - the installers buried the blower compartment in custom millwork with no access panel. We cut a proper access opening, replace with a Ball bearing motor rated for the same CFM but lower draw, and wire a separate fuse block so the next failure doesn’t take the board with it.
- Chimney-top termination caps: rusted spark arrestor mesh. Gelco’s factory caps are galvanized steel with a 20-mesh screen. After seven Waltham winters, the mesh corrodes at the weld points and collapses inward, blocking draft. We replace with a stainless Famco cap with 5/8-inch mesh - same spark protection, no rust, and the larger mesh doesn’t clog with creosote flakes as fast.
Our Gelco Fireplace Services Process

- 1
Call and schedule. A live person answers. We ask for the Gelco model name or a photo of the data plate - usually behind the lower louver or on the firebox side wall. Corrine Halstead or a named tech is assigned, and you get a text when we’re en route.
- 2
Camera-scan inspection. NFPA 211 Level 2 standard: camera down the flue, photos of the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, and termination. On gas units, we add a combustion analysis - CO in ambient air, gas pressure at the valve, draft reading over the fire. Everything goes in your file under Haven Standard Clause 4.
- 3
Written price, written scope. Before any wrench turns, you get a single-page quote with line items, parts source (OEM Gelco, DuraFlex, HeatShield, or quality aftermarket), and warranty term. Clause 1 of the Haven Standard: have it in writing.
- 4
Repair with documented steps. We photograph before, during, and after. On a firebox panel job, that means the cracked panel measured, the new panel seated, and the gap check with a feeler gauge. On a gas valve job, the manometer reading at idle and at full fire.
- 5
Operational test and sign-off. Wood unit: burn test for 20 minutes, check exterior for smoke spillage, verify draft with a draft gauge. Gas unit: run through all flame settings, confirm blower amperage, check for gas leaks with electronic detector. You sign the tablet, we email the photo record before we leave.
- 6
365-Day Done Right Promise. If the draft pulls different, the pilot won’t stay lit, or anything else isn’t right, we come back and make it right. No charge. That’s stamped on every job.

Why Waltham Homeowners Call Level Two Chimney Waltham for Gelco Work

We’ve been in Waltham long enough to know which houses near Prospect Hill Park have the same Gelco insert the builder spec’d in 2014, and which ones on Lyman Street got a swap-out during the 2019 renovation wave. Corrine Halstead learned this trade at Suffolk County Community College and has spent the better part of two decades working on chimneys up and down the Northeast. Her crew knows the difference between a GS-1 and a GS-2 without pulling the manual.
Every job gets the Haven Standard: written price first, camera documentation always, verified crew, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise. We carry Gelco, DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Olympia Chimney materials - if your part’s back-ordered, we have options that don’t leave you cold for three weeks. And when we say we’ll text you when we’re on the way, we mean it. No 4-hour windows.
FAQs
No. As an independent Gelco service provider, we’re not affiliated with the manufacturer, but factory warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship - not who performs routine service. Keep your invoice; if a factory defect appears, you’ll need proof of annual maintenance, which we document under Haven Standard Clause 4. Call (781) 649-9326 to schedule.
OEM Gelco refractory panels and gas valves typically ship in 5-10 business days. We stock common wear items - pilot assemblies, blower motors, gaskets - through our Haven buying network, and we cross-reference DuraFlex and HeatShield equivalents when the factory part is delayed. We’ll tell you before you book whether we have your part on the shelf. Call (781) 649-9326 to check availability.
Repair makes sense if the firebox is sound, parts are available, and the repair costs less than 40% of a new installed unit. We replace when the steel firebox is warped or rusted through, the flue collar is cracked, or parts have been obsolete for more than two years. We’ll show you the camera footage and run both numbers in writing. Call (781) 649-9326 for a free assessment.
Gas units: annually, before the heating season. Wood units: after every cord of wood burned, or annually if you burn less. In Waltham, where many Gelco inserts heat basements that stay damp through spring, we also recommend a mid-season check of the pilot and burner if you smell mustiness near the unit. Call (781) 649-9326 to book.
Deferred maintenance on a gas unit risks delayed ignition (a small explosion on start-up from accumulated dust), elevated carbon monoxide from incomplete combustion, and blower motor failure that overheats the valve. We catch these with a combustion analysis and visual inspection - not guesswork. The camera doesn’t guess. Neither do we. Call (781) 649-9326 for a free estimate.
