• The damper won’t open or close fully. On HeatShield cable-pull models, the stainless cable frays where it exits the firebox wall, or the spiral spring inside the frame housing loses tension after 15-20 years of heating and cooling cycles. A stuck damper in either direction means smoke or conditioned air is going somewhere it shouldn’t.
• You feel a cold downdraft even when the damper is “closed.” HeatShield top-sealing dampers use a silicone or rubber gasket that hardens and cracks, especially in Waltham’s freeze-thaw cycles. Once the seal is compromised, the damper plate sits on metal-to-metal contact and leaks air continuously.
• Rust flakes or orange dust in the firebox. This indicates the damper plate or frame is spalling, a condition accelerated by the acidic condensation that forms when a flue is oversized for the appliance. In Waltham, we see this most often in homes that converted from oil to gas without resizing the flue.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things a Waltham homeowner can safely check without tools: whether the control handle is fully engaging (listen for the cam click), and whether debris on the damper plate is preventing closure.
